Lululemon The Mat Review
After using $10 yoga mats for quite some time, I was expecting quite a change once I paid $70 for “The Mat” from Lululemon. You might be curious to know how it ranked when put up against my checklist for the perfect yoga mat.
The Mat – Pros
Perhaps one of my favorite things about The Mat is the fact that it stand up to a lot of abuse. I’ve already been using it for 6 months and I use it every day. Even though it has has taken a beating since I got it, it doesn’t show any signs of wear. I even use it for some intense training sessions and do it with my shoes on. Those cheap mats I was using would show the wear rather quickly and I would end up tossing them and busing another. I am happy that The Mat is so durable.
The green side of the mat is best used on top because the black side sticks to the floor like glue. The last thing I want is to have the mat slide out from underneath me while I am working out (and I tend to move around a lot).
That doesn’t mean that the green side doesn’t grip. The polyurethane coating on the surface makes it quite firm, so slipping and falling is not an issue. This is an important feature when doing anything that requires balance, such as deep knee bends. I also loved the thickness of the mat because it gives that little extra cushion that really makes a difference.
One of the most annoying problems I had with cheap mats is that they often smelled terrible. I couldn’t stand breathing in those noxious fumes while I was working out. The coating for The Mat includes something anti-microbial so it eliminated the smelly factor quite nicely. In addition, it could handle all of the sweat and absorbed it, but I never smelled a thing.
The Mat – Cons
I love The Mat but it does come with a $70 pricetag, so it could hurt if you were on a budget. For those who are only looking for an occasional workout mat, a less expensive option may work fine, depending on what you want. Another issue is the weight. I don’t mind the 5.5 lbs when I’m working out at home but it is a problem when I take it on the road. I just need to get creative with packing it so I don’t go over on my suitcase weight.
One of the biggest problems was the fact that it did get dirty easily. Dirt and dust would collect on the green side and it wasn’t the easiest to clean. For a mat this durable, keeping it clean is important because it is going to be around for a long time.
The Mat – Conclusion
For those of you who want a highly durable mat that will stand the test of time, you don’t need to look any further than The Mat. On the other hand, if you don’t work out often or you just want to do some low intensity training, a cheaper and lighter option might work. It just depends on your expectations.
